Jun 9, 2021 · S4S boards have two surfaced faces, and two ripped sides, resulting in perfectly square, flat, and parallel edges on all four sides. This is the type of lumber you will find in most consumer hardware and DIY stores.

Here are the common sizes of lumber, and their actual sizes. Note: S4S means surfaced four sides. Surfacing is most typically done by using a planer resulting in a wavy surface with several knife marks (see diagram on left) and the “S” does not stand for sanded.
