Jun 28, 2020 · Wayland is much newer than X11. If Wayland can run on your system without extensive setup, then you should stick with it. However some drivers have much less support for Wayland atm. If you're using an NVIDIA gpu under NVIDIA's notorious proprietary driver, then you should use X11. Unless you don't want hardware acceleration, of course.

Aug 28, 2021 · A proper comparison would be X11 (37) <-> Wayland (13) and Xorg (17) <-> Plasma Wayland session (6). Because Wayland is newer, it was thought for modern computer usage. Firefox got hardware video acceleration on Wayland way before the X11 version did. The Night Color management in Plasma was a thing on the Wayland session before the X11 session.

X is network transparent, you can display the window, or with XDMCP a complete session, on a terminal while the actual program is running on another, usually more powerful machine. All of them - no developer wants to touch X11 code unless they are getting paid (which Red Hat is paying for their developers, but they will stop soon). No one wants to work kn X11, so it is dying, slowly at first but now speeding up.

Nov 14, 2021 · X11 does worse if you have compositing on in KDE, is there something similar with sway or I3? I know WM vs DE but still. I know when compositing is off Wayland SHOULD have higher latency then x11 in games. But in my case, when I don't turn off compositing wayland ends up being better just because x11 is being gimped.

X-based applications have almost no isolation from each other, meaning everyone can access everyone's internal data (e.g. reading and hijacking inputs), leaving any mitigations fully on the application's side.

May 27, 2024 · Reading the Arch wiki, seems to be that X11 deals better with the mentioned topics (or at least that's what I've understood as most of packages mentioned for both touchscreens and stylus pens are for X11; please correct me if I'm wrong) but also seems to be that Wayland is slowly replacing X11.
