The Waccamaw Siouan Indians are one of eight state-recognized Native American tribes in North Carolina. Located predominantly in the southeastern North Carolina counties of Bladen and Columbus, in the communities of St. James, Buckhead, and Council.

Waccamaw Siouan Indians live in St. James, Buckhead, and Council, with the Waccamaw Siouan tribal homeland situated on the edge of Green Swamp about 37 miles from Wilmington, North Carolina, seven miles from Lake Waccamaw, and four miles north of Bolton, North Carolina.

After the Waccamaw and South Carolina war the Waccamaw sought refuge in the swamp lands of North Carolina. The present home of the Waccamaw Siouan, is situated on the edge of the Green swamp about thirty-seven miles west of Wilmington, North Carolina.

The Waccamaw Siouan Tribe invites the public to share in their 52nd year of "Celebrating Culture and Traditions" during the Annual Waccamaw Siouan Pow Wow. The event will be held on Friday, October 18th and Saturday, October 19th on the Waccamaw Siouan Tribal Grounds in the Buckhead Community of Bolton, NC.

The Waccamaw Indians were a Siouan-speaking tribe, probably related to the so-called Cape Fear Indians, who populated parts of modern-day southeastern North Carolina.

An eastern Siouan tribe that once resided in the southeastern part of North Carolina and upper sections of South Carolina, the Waccamaw lived, hunted, and fished along the rivers and swamps of the region.

Waccamaw Siouan people in the late 19th century in North Carolina farmed diverse crops on inherited lands, but agriculture was depressed. They increasingly turned to wage labor by the end of the century.

Welcome to Waccamaw Siouan STEM Studio! We are an award winning, grassroots community led program founded by members of the Waccamaw Siouan Tribe in STEM careers on a mission to increase our communities understanding of STEM, while providing STEM opportunities to our tribal youth and community.

Dec 12, 2023 · The “People of the Falling Star”, currently known as the Waccamaw Siouan Indian Tribe is situated on the edge of the Green Swamp east of Lake Waccamaw off Hwy 211. The major communities of tribal members are St. James, east of Lake Waccamaw, and Buckhead and Council, north of Bolton, North Carolina.

The tribe is governed by the Waccamaw Siouan Tribal Council consisting of seven members who are elected by the tribal membership (any adult member, over 18) by secret ballot. They serve staggered terms of one to three years.
