We chose to make a mask of Teiresias, who was a blind man and very wise. At the beginning of the play, he tells Oedipus that he is the murderer of the previous king, Laius, that is causing the hardships for Thebes including various plagues.

We decided to make the mask half blind to symbolize how Oedipus sees Teiresias even though he is the most blind of all to his past and its effects. The black eye represents Tiresias’ blindness while still possessing sight in wisdom.
