The T-54 and T-55 have a cabin layout shared with many post-World War II tanks, with the fighting compartment in the front, the engine compartment in the rear, and a dome-shaped turret in the hull's centre. The driver's hatch is on the front left of the hull roof.

Dec 17, 2024 · The all-welded steel hull of the T-55 is divided into three main compartments: driver at the front, fighting in the center and the engine and transmission at the rear. The hull and the turret provide protection for the crew against the firing of small arms and shell splinters.

The turret has been replaced by a new design: large flat-plate with slightly chamfered sides, vertical rear, very chamfered front, and a large A-frame crane mounted in the front. The crane has cylindrical winch rope feer between legs of the crane.

T-54/T-55 mine-clearing tanks can be fitted with a wide range of mine-clearing equipment including singular and combined roller and plough type systems mounted on the front of the hull. Some lack turrets while others have built-up superstructures.

The MT-55 launches a two part scissor bridge in front of the vehicle. It is more capable than the Soviet MTU series. The MT-55 can be identified by the T-55 chassis in combination with the forward launching scissor bridge.

The track system is dominated by five main wheels, with the front pair clearly separated from the remaining four rear wheels. The drive sprocket remains at the end of the design and the chain idler is up front, no chain idler is used.
