From the late 1950s, the T-54 eventually became the main tank for armoured units of the Soviet Army, armies of the Warsaw Pact countries, and many others. T-54s and T-55s have been involved in many of the world's armed conflicts since their introduction in the second half of the 20th century. The T-54/55 series is the most-produced tank in history.

The hull has also been modified with reactive armor, a new rear shape (additional armor plates or modified original armor?) and new mudguards. More modifications are likely, mostly in the turret and driver's compartment. The original engine and transmission remain probably untouched.

May 9, 2024 · The T-55MV incorporated "Kontakt-1" Explosive Reactive Armor (ERA) blocks for much improved protection against incoming anti-tank missiles. The use of ERA replaced the Drozd protection scheme of noted earlier. The T-55MV-1s were nothing more than T-55MV models with the V-46-5M diesel engine of 691 horsepower.

The applique turret armor and new side skirts give the T-55AM a distinctive look. The T-55AM retains the manually loaded 100mm D-10T2S rifled gun. The firepower is improved by the ability to launch the Bastion anti-tank missile from the barrel.
