Riddick is transported to prison on the Hunter Gratzner, a commercial cargo spaceship. When the craft is damaged in the wake of a comet and makes an emergency crash landing on an isolated desert planet, Riddick escapes. However, when flying creatures begin attacking all the survivors, Riddick joins forces with the others to escape the planet.

Skiffs are small essentially disposable emergency ships, not designed to be star jumpers (although merc skiffs sometimes have this capability). The research colony at M-344/G had one of these small vessels. It was essential for Riddick, Imam, and Jacks escape from the planet.

To escape, Riddick uses the communication system from a mercenary outpost to lure two ships to the planet, intending to commandeer one. However, his plan becomes complicated when one of the arriving mercenaries turns out to be the father of William J. Johns, his old adversary.

Basilica is the flagship and command centre of the Necromonger armada. The ship contains their capital of Necropolis, in which the Lord Marshal and commanders reside. It also has the Order of the Quasi-Dead onboard.
