i just finished the poppy war and i have questions about the timeline. when the book starts rin is 14 and she takes the exam at 16. when she's a first year at the academy, altan is a fifth year which makes him 21. at some point it is mentioned that rin is 19 and that the speerly island massacre happened 20 years ago.
A DNF Review of The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang : r/Fantasy - Reddit
May 14, 2021 · The Poppy War is a book I was very excited to read after seeing its summary. It markets itself as a story of growth, as a village girl makes it into the school reserved only for the upper classes. But this is not what it is. One of the many reasons I dropped The Poppy War was due to the very rapid and massive tonal shift midway through the book.
The Poppy Wars - Does it get better? Am I going insane? : r/books …
Apr 16, 2024 · The Poppy War is intentionally a book about a bad person, albeit one who is not an outright monster, and who veers between being a hero and a villain. This is what makes the series interesting and unique. If you do not want to read a series about a bad person, do not read it.

Jun 28, 2018 · The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang. When Rin aced the Keju, the Empire-wide test to find the most talented youth to learn at the Academies, it was a shock to everyone: to the test officials, who couldn’t believe a war orphan from Rooster Province could pass without cheating; to Rin’s guardians, who believed they’d finally be able to marry her off and further their criminal …

The Poppy War and History (Spoilers) : r/Fantasy - Reddit
Jun 6, 2020 · The Poppy War books don't really map onto 20th Century Chinese history beyond the broad strokes, and some key elements are changed. I actually think that's a good thing, though- it keeps things fresh and prevents the plot from being too predictable.
The Poppy War Trilogy by R. F. Kuang - A Review : r/Fantasy - Reddit
May 7, 2021 · I feel like the ending of THE POPPY WAR was one of the great endings like GAME OF THRONES or THE LAST ARGUMENT OF KINGS. Basically, so much fantasy is repeated tropes and traditions that it is rare that something happens that completely subverts your expectations like the heroine committing genocide and becoming a monster worse than …
The poppy war series : r/books - Reddit
The Poppy War series has some serious flaws, but it has the pure, unadulterated passion of adolescence running through it that kept me coming back for more. It reads like a teenager’s fever dream sometimes, but there are some really epic moments.
The Poppy War ch 21 : r/Fantasy - Reddit
Aug 8, 2022 · But I’ve definitely seen the poppy war being described as “Avatar if azula won”, (equating Rin to Azula). Which, while Avatar definitely has its own genocides in it, they’re dealt with (glazed over more like, but it is also a kid show so…) differently than having a whole in world detailed replica of the Nanjing massacre. 😬
The Poppy War. Not so good. : r/Fantasy - Reddit
Jul 26, 2023 · The Poppy War is sold as a deconstruction of violence in the fantasy genre, and as a decolonisation of the genre. This is what made me try the first novel in the series. I felt really let down that the book turned out to be nothing but clichés and stereotypes of colonialism.
