A Pegasus is a bird-winged horse capable of flight and, in Narnia, generally a Talking Beast. The first Pegasus in Narnia was Fledge, formerly known as Strawberry when he worked pulling a hansom cab in London.

Pegasus Pegasi are horses with great wings rising from their flanks. They are glorious and majestic creatures, and also extremely rare. "Pegasus" is the name of the winged horse in Greek Mythology, born from the blood that flowed when Perseus slew Medusa. He was then used by Bellerophon to slay the Chi mera. Since then, the image of a horse with wings has persisted in stories and culture, whether these horses are named Pegasus or another name.

It is the sixth published of seven novels in The Chronicles of Narnia (1950–1956). In recent editions, which sequence the books according in chronological order, it is placed as the first volume of the series. Like the others, it was illustrated by Pauline Baynes whose work has been retained in many later editions.
