A motor capacitor [1] [2] is an electrical capacitor that alters the current to one or more windings of a single-phase alternating-current induction motor to create a rotating magnetic field. Motor capacitors temporarily store an electrical charge to provide extra torque and improve a motor's performance and efficiency. Start capacitors deliver extra torque during motor startup, then exit the circuit once the motor reaches operating speed.

A capacitor is required for a single-phase motor to provide the necessary phase shift to start the motor and to improve its running efficiency. In a 1-phase motor, the starting torque is essential to overcome the initial inertia and bring the motor to its operating speed.
