The source of the meme seems to be that Kriegsmen have shovels on their backpacks, so they especially love shovels and like to use them in battle. This is ignoring a couple of practical factors. First is that guardsmen have entrenching tools as a standard kit item, the Kriegers are simply carring them rather than having left their packs behind.
