Nov 10, 2019 · Writing a hypothesis statement goes well beyond just identifying the function of the challenging behavior. It needs to outline everything we know about the behavior so we can use it to lead directly into our behavior support plan.

We need to develop our best guess, or hypothesis, about the function of the behavior. So, how do we do that? I have a freebie and some guidelines to help with that. Based on your summary of the data, you should have some ideas of when and where the behaviors are occurring.

Example hypothesis (behavior) statement: “Tino falls onto the floor, screaming and crying, when asked to clean up his toys, and he is then taken to his room where his mom rocks him on the rocking chair to calm him down.”
