The game starts at a funeral of a man named "Eggman the Destroyer". Due to amount of game references in the game, this is most likely a reference to Dr. Eggman. However, according to an interview with the game's creator, Hideki Kamiya, he stated that it was completely random and he didn't even know that Sonic's enemy was called Eggman.
