It was founded in 1940 and used by the navy during the Second World War, mainly to provision, protect and repair merchant marine convoys to Quebec, Halifax, and the United Kingdom. It was a main combat zone during the Battle of the St. Lawrence and the more general Battle of the Atlantic. It continued to be used during the Cold War 's early stages.

HMCS Protecteur (AOR 509)[a] was the lead ship of the Protecteur -class replenishment oilers in service with the Royal Canadian Navy. She was part of Maritime Forces Pacific (MARPAC), homeported at CFB Esquimalt, British Columbia. Built by Saint John Shipbuilding and Dry Docks in Saint John, New Brunswick, she was commissioned on 30 August 1969.

Dec 16, 2024 · Canadian shipbuilder Seaspan christened and ceremonially launched 'HMCS Protecteur', the first in a new class of Auxiliary Oiler Replenishment (AOR) vessels for the Royal Canadian Navy. The ceremony took place on December 13. 2024.

A major refit began in 2001, and on May 22, 2002, HMCS Protecteur left Esquimalt to replace HMCS Preserver in the Arabian Sea for Operation Apollo, Canada's military contribution to the international campaign against terrorism.

Dec 14, 2024 · A Canadian Navy vessel with the name HMCS Protecteur will again set sail, nearly a decade after the last supply ship with its respected legacy was taken out of service.

The two new ships are currently under construction with the first, future His Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS) Protecteur, expected to be delivered to the RCN in 2025. Protecteur will be the lead ship of the class, and the second will be named HMCS Preserver. Protecteur will remain on the West Coast, with Preserver destined for Halifax.

HMCS PROTECTEUR will have a cruising speed of 15 knots, a top speed of 20 knots and a range of ~10,800 nautical miles. This joint support ship (JSS) is a multi-role naval ship capable of launching and supporting “joint” amphibious operations.

Royal Canadian Navy base HMCS PROTECTOR, also known as the Point Edward Naval Base, was located next to Sydney Harbour, on Nova Scotia's Cape Breton Island. It was stood up on 22 Jul 1940 and used by the navy during the Second World War.
