Globin - Wikipedia
The globins are a superfamily of heme -containing globular proteins, involved in binding and/or transporting oxygen. These proteins all incorporate the globin fold, a series of eight alpha helical segments. Two prominent members include myoglobin and hemoglobin. Both of these proteins reversibly bind oxygen via a heme prosthetic group.
Evolution of Hemoglobin and Its Genes - PMC
HEMOGLOBINS WITHIN THE FAMILY OF GLOBIN HEME PROTEINS. Hemoglobins were originally discovered as abundant proteins in red blood cells of mammals and other jawed vertebrates (gnathostomes) that bind and release oxygen reversibly.
Globin - an overview | ScienceDirect Topics
Globin refers to a group of O2-binding heme proteins found in various organisms, including bacteria, protists, fungi, plants, and animals. They have diverse functions such as binding and transporting oxygen, scavenging reactive species, and sensing oxygen levels.
Globular protein - Wikipedia
3-dimensional structure of hemoglobin, a globular protein. In biochemistry, globular proteins or spheroproteins are spherical ("globe-like") proteins and are one of the common protein types (the others being fibrous, disordered and membrane proteins).
Globin | definition of globin by Medical dictionary
The protein of hemoglobin; α-globin and β-globin represent the two types of chains found in adult hemoglobin. Synonym (s): hematohiston. n. Any of a group of heme-containing proteins, including myoglobin and hemoglobin, that can bind oxygen and other gases.
The Globin Superfamily: Functions in Nitric Oxide Formation and …
Globin proteins are ubiquitous in living organisms and carry out a variety of functions related to the ability of their prosthetic heme group to bind gaseous ligands such as O2, NO and CO. Moreover, they catalyze important reactions with nitrogen ...
Difference between Globin and Globulin - BYJU'S
Globin and Globulin are proteins that help in the transportation of substances in the bloodstream. Hemoglobin is a globin protein, whereas immunoglobulins come under globulins. Let’s look at the differences between globin and globulin proteins.

May 1, 2023 · Hemoglobin is an oxygen-binding protein found in erythrocytes that transports oxygen from the lungs to tissues. Each hemoglobin molecule is a tetramer made of four polypeptide globin chains. Each globin subunit contains a heme moiety formed of an organic protoporphyrin ring and a central iron ion in the ferrous state (Fe2+).
