Jul 13, 2021 · Presently, every time I want to check something off I have to Google "checkmark", copy the symbol from a 3 rd party website, paste it into a text editor to remove formatting, and then copy and paste it into the program I'm trying to use. (Word has an option to remove formatting, but most other programs don't.)

But I was able to turn it into an actual tick symbol with =UNICHAR(10003) Enter Up Ctrl+C Ctrl+Shift+V — longer than I'd hoped for, but it works! (Alt+0252 puts a ü character in the cell. It might look like a check mark, but it isn't. It will export to anything reading the data as ü.

Every program reacts the same - whether I copy from and paste to them - and I experienced the issue since Windows 8 which is why I'm not mentioning any specific version numbers. I'm now using Windows 10 as mentioned. The system locale I use on all my devices is English (United States) yet this is the only device with the annoying copy-paste issue.

This may not be ideal if you don't know in advance exactly what you want to use. Highlighting in MS Word I see that on my system it is part of the Segoe UI Emoji font family.

Note that you have to be in a unicode format for the characters to display in Notepad++. This is done by going to the Format menu and selecting "Encode in UTF-8" or similar. Now you can paste in Greek letters, subscripts, etc. into Notepad++.
