Mar 12, 2025 · Antrim Shale in MI is exposed only in the northern part of the basin in Antrim, Charlevoix, Cheboygan, and Alpena Counties. Also exposed in a few localities near the southern margin of the basin in northwestern Ohio, and northern Indiana.
Oct 4, 2024 · Figure 1. Index map showing limits of Antrim Shale plays as assessed. The up-dip limits of the plays (the outer perimeter) are defined by the extent of the Antrim Shale subcrop beneath the Pleistocene glacial drift. The downdip limit is represented by the approximate 2000 ft depth to top Antrim Shale.

The Antrim Shale in the Michigan Basin is one of the most productive shale gas formations in the U.S., but optimal resource recovery strategies must rely on a thorough understanding of the...
geologic maps of the Devonian-Mississippian strata in Alpena County, Michigan with a focus on delineating the members of the Antrim Shale. The resulting maps will be useful for resource (aggregate and natural gas) and natural hazard (sinkholes) assessment. These refined Alpena bedrock maps provide the community

Shales are an important component in the manufacture of Portland cement. The map below shows where the Antrim shale crops out in Michigan. Note, however, that it is NOT drilled for gas where it crops out (all the gas has escaped from these areas).
