Aksum, powerful kingdom in northern Ethiopia during the early Christian era. Despite common belief to the contrary, Aksum did not originate from one of the Semitic Sabaean kingdoms of southern Arabia but instead developed as a local power.

The Kingdom of Aksum, [note 1] [a] or the Aksumite Empire, [b] was a kingdom in East Africa and South Arabia from classical antiquity to the Middle Ages, based in what is now northern Ethiopia and Eritrea, and spanning present-day Djibouti and Sudan.
