Authorities say that at least one sheriff’s deputy fatally shot a person suspected of driving a stolen car in Memphis, Tennessee.

Investigators said the deputy found someone in a stolen car. It was immediately unclear how things escalated, but the situation ended with the deputy firing at least one shot, hitting and killing a suspect.

A Shelby County Sheriff’s Office deputy was involved in a shooting Tuesday, the sheriff’s office said. The shooting happened in the 1600 block of Shelby Oaks Drive, in northeast Memphis. All drivers are asked to avoid the area for a few hours during the investigation.
