XHTML Version 1.0, also known as HTML 4.01, is a reformulation of HTML 4.0 as an XML 1.0 application. It includes three Document Type Definitions.

Work stops on the XHTML language, but W3C still plans an XML formulation of HTML5, to be done by the HTML working group. A prominent AJAX and Web development proponent applauded the W3C decision.
