Sil, a veteran actress known for her role in Netflix's hit Squid Game and who has appeared in such films like Train to Busan, has died at 81.

“Squid Game” actress Lee Joo-sil has died at age 81. Lee passed away Sunday at her family home in Uijeongbu, South Korea, according to Korean newspaper The Chosun Ilbo. She was diagnosed with stomach cancer in Nov. 2024, the paper said.

Lee Joo-Sil can be seen in Squid Game as Hwang Jun-Ho (Wi Ha-Joon) and Hwang In-ho (Lee Byung-hun)’s mother, Park Mal-soon. She was revealed to be quite the caring mother who was worried about both of her sons as they have been caught within the chaos of Squid Game‘s two season run thus far.

Her funeral will be held on February 5 at Severance Hospital in Seoul, where fans can pay their respects starting February 4.
