Advocates for victims of sexual violence said the decision would put students at greater risk of harassment while conservative lawmakers and advocates applauded the move, arguing it would make students safer.

President Donald Trump’s Department of Education has told K-12 schools and higher learning institutions that Title IX protections will be recognized on the basis of biological sex.

The Trump administration’s Office of Civil Rights said in a “Dear Colleague” letter Friday that it would enforce the 2020 Title IX rules, not the Biden administration’s rule expanding the definition of sex discrimination to include gender identity.

In a letter from Craig Trainor, the Acting Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights at the DOE, the Trump administration struck Biden-era protections for LGBTQ+ students and restored 2020 rules that lengthened complaints by mandating hearings and cross-examinations in investigations.
