Climate modeling once grew out of numerical weather prediction. Since then, meteorologists and climate researchers have developed models for weather and climate largely separately from one another.

These forecast models use physics-based capabilities to simulate atmospheric conditions to arrive at a forecast, a process known as Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP).
