The Senate voted on Monday to confirm Marco Rubio as President Donald Trump’s secretary of state, the first high-level Cabinet official for the new administration to be approved by the chamber.

Hours after Trump was sworn in as president, senators confirmed his first Cabinet pick and advanced the nominations of several others through committee.

With their confirmation hearings behind them, the fates of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., President Donald Trump’s nominee for health secretary, and Tulsi Gabbard, his pick for director of national intelligence,

Before President Trump can begin working with his cabinet picks, nominees must be confirmed by the Senate.  After they are vetted and submitted to the Senate, nominees are referred to committees with jurisdiction over their nominations.

The questions raised by senators about Gabbard’s judgment and experience make her one of the more contentious of Trump’s Cabinet nominees. Given thin Republican margins in the Senate, she will need almost all GOP senators to vote yes in order to win confirmation.
