Irv Gotti, the Murder Inc. Records label executive who helped launch Ja Rule and Ashanti to stardom, has died at age 54.
Gotti came to prominence as an A&R rep at Def Jam, where he helped sign and cultivate era-defining acts like Jay-Z , DMX and Ja Rule.
With his Murder Inc. label, he dominated radio and charts by bridging the divide between pop and rap, serving as a marketing guru and, at the time, one of hip-hop’s most influential figures.
Irv Gotti has died, PEOPLE has confirmed. The famed producer and Murder Inc. Records cofounder was 54 years old.
