WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration said Wednesday it is suing Maine’s education department for not complying with the government’s push to ban transgender athletes in girls and women’s sports, escalating a dispute over whether the state is abiding by a federal law that bars discrimination in education based on sex.

In an interview on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” Monday, Janet Mills condemned the administration's efforts to withhold funding from her state.

The Trump administration escalated its fight against transgender athletes Wednesday, suing Maine for allegedly violating federal law by refusing to prevent “biological boys” from competing on girls’ sports teams.
