The looming demise of three NASA satellites has scientists bracing for the loss of climate and atmospheric data — especially since there are no plans to replace some of the specialized instruments aboard the Earth-observing probes.

SPHEREx will begin routine science operations in late April, NASA said. At that time, the space telescope will begin taking about 600 exposures a day. The observatory is capable of detecting infrared light. Each six-image exposure captures up to 102 shades, NASA said.

NASA's Webb telescope has captured pictures of the asteroid that caused a stir earlier this year when it topped Earth's hit list.

NASA's SPHEREx (short for Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization and Ices Explorer) has turned on its detectors for the first time in space. Initial images from the observatory,
