Syria’s interim president has made his first trip abroad, traveling to Saudi Arabia in a move likely trying to signal Damascus’ shift away from Iran as its main regional ally.

The rebel chief who led the overthrow of the longtime dictator Bashar al-Assad has been declared the head of government for a transitional period.

Syria's interim president Ahmed Al Sharaa will visit Turkey on Tuesday on his second international visit since the toppling of Bashar Al Assad in December, the Turkish presidency said. He went to Saudi Arabia on Sunday.
