OpenAI is announcing a new AI "agent" designed to help people conduct in-depth, complex research using ChatGPT, the company's AI-powered chatbot platform.

On the heels of its o3 mini release, OpenAI announced a new ChatGPT agent for handling in-depth research. Appropriately, it's called "deep research."

DeepSeek, the Chinese AI company, caught the entire AI market by surprise, and no one more so than OpenAI. Its ChatGPT-like model R1 received raving reviews with a fraction of the development cost. President Trump called it a “wake-up” call for the entire American tech industry.

Described as “an agent that uses reasoning to synthesize large amounts of online information and complete multi-step research tasks for you,” deep research is now available to users on ChatGPT’s $200 per month Pro plan; Plus and Team plans are next in the queue to receive access, with Enterprise users following.
