A child has died of measles in Texas, officials said — the first death from the highly contagious disease the United States has seen in a decade. The school-age child was not vaccinated, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services.

After being declared eradicated 25 years ago, measles is making a comeback. The good news is, most people who were vaccinated have good protection. Throughout February, a measles outbreak has been growing in West Texas.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Friday upheld the role of vaccines in offering protection against measles after an unvaccinated child succumbed to the infection earlier this week.
