If you’re interested in seeing the enormity of an engineering design and it’s not too far out of the way, then yes. Just past the tour Centre the road continues up a lookout hill, which allows you to see both sides of the very large dam walls. We also were unable to go on a tour, but I’m glad we went to see it. Maybe if the center is open they might have a video that also describes the building of it. There are also some great time elapse videos on u-tube to help the kids realise the enormity and significance.
